Stopover in Hong Kong - GolfOne of the most popular pastimes in Hong Kong - and the sport's following is growing all the time. However it is a complaint of the locals that there are too few public courses for the number of golfing enthusiasts, so you have to be either lucky or persistant to book a tee time!

If you are in town at the start of December, you may well catch the Hong Kong Open - a massive worldwide golfing event which takes place early in the twelfth month each year. Some of golf's biggest stars regular turn out for the event.

Royal Hong Kong Golf Club, Fan Ling

Home to the Hong Kong Open, the three courses at Fan Ling make for great golf - but are fairly expensive for the stopover traveller. Green fees for visiting foreigners are HK$1400 on weekdays. Tel: (852) 2670-1211or (852) 2679-5183 for further details.

Discovery Bay Golf Club

A car free zone as this course is accessible only by ferry. Situated on the East coast of Lanau Island, the course is open to non members on Monday, Tuesday and Friday - again green fees cost HK$1400. Tel: (852) 2987-7273

Jockey Club Kai Sau Chau Public Golf Course

Incredibly, this is the only completely public golf course in Hong Kong! The complex in the New Territories features 36 holes as well as a driving range, For non-Hong Kong residents green fees start at HK$550 for 18 holes, and HK$330 for 9 holes. Tel: (852) 2791-3388.

Deepwater Bay Golf Club

Situated on the south side of Hong Kong island, Deepwater Bay is open to visitors every weekday between 9am and 2pm. There is a nine hole course and dining facilities offering both chinese and european cuisine.

Green fees for visitors are HK$450 for 18 holes - but you will need a handicap certificate to play.Tel: (852) 2812 7070 for more details.

Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club

A picturesque 18 hole course on a stunning peninsula in the New Territories. Green fees are HK$1400 for visitors, who at weekends can only play if invited by a member. Tel: (852) 2719 1595.

Oriental Golf City

If you're not quite up to a full round, you can practice your swing at Oriental Golf City, formerly an airport. For just HK$70 you get an hours worth of practice and stunning views of Hong Kong island! Tel: (852) 25222111
